Help Find a Treatment for Nemaline Myopathy  

Please help Evan Skoug raise money to support A Foundation Building Strength for Nemaline Myopathy to find a treatment for Kate Mitchell and others who have this medical condition.

On Jan 4, 2014, Evan, a senior at Libertyville High School, will represent Illinois in baseball’s Power Showcase "Home Runs That Help"  home run derby.  All of the home runs hit by Evan are dedicated to Kate and the money raised will go to a Foundation for Building Strength. This year (2014) Spalding is donating gold baseballs. On the 15th out - if a home run is hit with the gold money ball, donations are multiplied by five (encouraged but not required). Evan will get a total of 20 outs to see how many HR’s he can hit on the major league field.

 

Kate was born with Nemaline Myopathy, which is a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy.  Kate is a 2nd grader at Butterfield Elementary school in Libertyville. Since the age of 1, Kate has endured multiple hospitalizations because her weak muscles make it difficult to cough sufficiently and, as a result, a common cold can turn into a serious pneumonia or lung collapse. Because of Kate’s NM, she is currently unable to walk and uses a scooter for mobility. Yet, despite all of these physical challenges, Kate is one of the sweetest and most social little girls that you will ever meet. She excels at playing violin, likes rainbow looming with friends and reading fairy series books.  Kate does very well in school and has many friends who love her dearly. Development of a medical treatment for NM that would improve muscle strength could make a meaningful difference to Kate’s future.
